A hang tag is a small printed component whose size, stock, hole, attachment and finish must work together. The buyer should begin with the product, attachment method and information hierarchy, then choose paper or board, print process, die shape, lamination or varnish and packing. A flat PDF cannot prove hole position, string clearance, curl or attachment behaviour.

Specify finished dimensions, stock or caliper, hole or slot, corner shape, attachment, print sides, finish, quantity and packing format. Approve a physical tag attached to the intended product or a representative fixture. Keep critical copy and codes away from holes, folds and die edges.

Choose stock and attachment from use

A light card may suit a small label, while a heavier board or reinforced hole may be needed for a larger tag or longer attachment. String, elastic, ribbon and plastic fasteners create different hole, tear and clearance requirements.

Lamination, varnish, foil and embossing alter stiffness and surface feel. Do not claim a universal “premium” or durability result without the specified material and handling test.

Prepare artwork and die lines

Supply a vector dieline with cut, hole, crease, print, foil and finish layers separated. Mark safe areas, barcode quiet zones, variable data and the attachment side.

If offset printing is selected, the current ISO 12647-2:2013 scope covers colour separations, proofs and offset production, including cardboard packaging; it does not replace a project colour master or structural sample.

Cost categories may include prepress, die, hole tooling, setup, finishing, attachment preparation, makeready waste, prototypes and inspection.

Approve an attached sample

A PDF can approve content and outline but not tag stiffness, hole tearing, attachment clearance or curl. A white die-cut sample may omit print and finish.

Approve a physical tag on the intended product or a representative fixture. Pull and handle it as expected, check code readability, finish, hole edge and packing orientation.

Define production start and QC

Start after artwork, stock, die, attachment, finish, sample or proof, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.

Inspection can cover size, die completeness, hole position, print registration, colour reference, barcode, scratches, lamination edge, embossing, curl, tear resistance at the hole and correct packing.

Prevent common failures

Hole tearing can follow insufficient edge distance, thin stock or excessive attachment load. Curl can follow unbalanced lamination or moisture. Small copy can be lost near a die or finish.

Reduce risk with a functional hole layout, representative attachment test, controlled material, clear safe areas and first-off comparison with the approved master.
